Top Cyclist Sets the Pace at World Cup
Top track cyclist Gary Williams was in great form at the recent Visa Paralympic World Cup getting the better of compatriot Darren Kenny and securing a gold medal in the 3000m pursuit final for the combined CP3/LC1 category.
“I was pleased with the win,” said Gary post-race. “It was the first real pressure race of the season and it was good to test myself against one of the best in the business. It gives me a good idea of where I am at formwise and will certainly help in my preparations for the World Championships in August in Bordeaux.”
Gary’s winning time of 3:40.873 minutes was his best performance this year and was enough to secure the victory.
“I was particularly pleased with the time,” continued Gary. “Temperatures on and around the track play a big part in your performance. When I set my personal best last year it was 6 degrees warmer than last Friday which made for a fast time. This time – even though it was considerably cooler – I got within .8 of a minute of my PB, so I have got to take confidence from that.”
Gary was not the only one celebrating in an extraordinary day of success for GB Paralympic cyclists. World records went in the 1 Kilometre time trial and tandem sprint events and dominant performances across the board delivered six gold medals for the host nation.
