Paralympic World Cup

As Manchester gears itself up to host the 2008 Paralympic World Cup (7th to 11th of May), Paralympic sport has never been more in the public eye, thanks largely to bi-lateral amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius and recent media interest in his quest to compete against able bodied athletes.

Now in its fourth year, the World Cup has attracted nearly 400 competitors, representing 45 countries. As host nation, Great Britain is fielding a team of 78 athletes, including PACE client Gary Williams in the cycling 4km pursuit competition.

Gary is ranked GB’s number one (world number five) in his category. He will be striving to earn a coveted place in the GB Paralympic team travelling to the Olympic Games in Beijing later this year.

“Manchester is a great opportunity for me to compare my form against my rivals” said Gary. “The World Cup will expose me to the pressures and strains associated with competing at this level, which is excellent experience and preparation.”
