Pace Team Take Expertise Over Seas
Experts from the leading rehabilitation clinic, PACE, travelled to Egypt recently to conduct an intensive five-day training programme for a multidisciplinary amputee rehabilitation team at the Agousa military hospital in Cairo.
The team lead by PACE’s Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr Ernest Van Ross, was invited to organise the Advanced Amputee and Prosthetic Rehabilitation Course at the Rehabilitation and Rheumatology Centre by the Ministry of Defence. The course was opened to University and civilian practitioners.
Dr Van Ross, prosthetist Toby Carlsson, physiotherapist Carolyn Hale and prosthetist / orthotist Jamie Gillespie worked with over 50 local clinicians during the five days. Mr Amar Jain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from Dundee joined the team for two days. Dr Ashraf Azer, Specialist Registrar, facilitated the course and also managed to do some teaching.
The course was a mix of clinical and practical demonstrations, and medical lectures covering subjects such as diabetes and the charcot foot, below knee amputation techniques, wound healing and walking training.
Commenting on the trip, Dr Van Ross said; “We were delighted to share knowledge with fellow practitioners in Egypt. We were keen to demonstrate the practical and clinical advantages of a multi-disciplinary approach to amputee rehabilitation, which is central to how we plan treatment programmes for our UK clients.”
“It is good to make a contribution to an evolving service in Egypt – it is certainly much needed - and the feedback we received was very positive.”
