Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing – E.M.D.R.
E.M.D.R. is a powerful psychological therapy recommended for trauma and post-traumatic stress. Many amputees have experienced trauma, whether their amputation was a result of an accident or illness and it is very difficult to work through a traumatic event in your life without help.
When traumatised our brain and our body respond in a different way, they recognise the emergency and take protective action to such an extent that normal brain processing or functioning is interrupted. The memories of the trauma seem to become ‘stuck’; locked in the nervous system with all the original images, sounds, smells, thoughts and feelings involved. These are then triggered over and over again, often out of the blue, causing flashbacks, nightmares and outbursts which can be very difficult to cope with. EMDR helps to unblock these distressing memories, which in turn loose their intensity enabling them to be accessed without the anxiety and disturbance. EMDR is recognised by the National Health Service advisory body and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for:
- Post-traumatic stress
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – CBT
CBT focuses on the thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes held (the cognitive processes) and how this relates to behaviour as a way of dealing with emotional problems. The client and therapist work together to understand the problems and to develop new strategies for tackling them. CBT can be an effective therapy for a number of problems:-
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Anger management
- General health problems
- Mood swings
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Sleep problems
Neuro Linguistic Programming – N.L.P.
NLP is a practical, “how to” approach to the psychology of change, development and effectiveness. Utilising easy to learn and subsequently self-administer, yet effective techniques to significantly enhance the ability to handle life changing events and challenges. By focusing on outcomes as a way of dealing with problems the following may be achieved:-
- Reducing limiting beliefs
- Pain management
- Enhancing self-appreciation and esteem
- Setting appropriate, achievable and motivating goals
- Freedom from past negative experiences
- Overcoming phobias
- Stress management
- Eliminate unwanted habits
- Anxiety-related problem
