Buddy Scheme Launched

On July 3rd 2008, Pace’s Buddy Scheme volunteers met for the first time. The willing volunteers were approached by Pace as individuals who have overcome their change in circumstances, since amputation and are living a full and active life. In short, they can be an inspiration to others.

The Pace clinicians identified a need to be able to direct those clients who are perhaps having difficulties adapting to their new situation, towards those who ‘have been there’ and have made successful progress in their own rehabilitation.

Meeting an established limb user can often be very beneficial to a recent amputee, as it can provide them with the opportunity to discuss issues or concerns with someone who understands. Sometimes, the provision of a listening ear, or sharing of tips and advice regarding how to overcome a particular obstacle, can alleviate fears or misconceptions a recent amputee may be concerned about.

It can be inspiring and motivating to hearing how someone who was in a similar situation has regained part of their life, be it returning to golf; ride a mountain biking; holidaying abroad; starting college or taking up skiing. This ‘real life’ experience can provide hope for the future to individuals who may currently be experiencing a negative perspective.

Sue Turner, Pace Rehabilitation’s new counselor in Cheadle, led the inaugural ‘Buddy Scheme’ meeting. The aim was for everyone to meet each other and learn what is expected of being a ‘Buddy’. Sue outlined what the intention of the scheme is and what it is not.

Advice was given as to how to be a good listener and about what is communicated by body language. Sue went on to explain how Pace Rehab will look after the ‘Buddy’s’ and how those who may benefit from a ‘Buddy’ might be helped.

Ultimately, those in need of emotional and psychological support will still be seen by Sue. She will assess those that she feels will benefit from the addition of being matched with a ‘Buddy’. The matching may be in terms of age or goals or life style.

Attendees welcomed the introduction to the service and look forward to being able to support individuals as a Buddy in the future.

This exciting and beneficial scheme will soon extend to Pace’s second clinic, in Chesham, Bucks.
